The Cycle: The eggs hatch in the spring. The young spend one to two years in the fresh water before migrating to the ocean in late March through July. Young often spend the first winter in off-channel areas. Coho salmon live in the salt water for one or two years before returning to spawn.

Typically, the best months to fish for salmon is July, August and September. King salmon have been caught upwards of 90 pounds on the west side of Prince of Wales Island.
